KORA 2010 at Ouagadougou on Sunday, April 4
A few years ago in Ruwenzori 01, a tiny room down a forsaken corridor in Kenya's Kenyatta University, two old high school classmates and a new friend were interrupted in their impromptu stress-relief jam session (which was fast becoming a habit) by another friend's enthusiastic exclamation, "You guys should form a band!"
The three young men - Bill Sellanga, Daniel Muli and Jim Chuchu - soon became inseparable, blurring the line between science and the arts by dabbling freely in journalism, web design and graphics. Their first project together was "Label Revolution", an online magazine that interviewed several Kenyan artists, both established and underground. They ran it for about three years, and realized that their musical ideas were as good as - if not better - than many of the musicians they had come into contact with. That was when Just A Band - the concept - became Just A Band - the reality.
The irony in their name is two-fold; nothing about them is just about the band. Bill is a session musician for several bands and routinely performs at concerts and gigs around the country. Daniel teaches graphic design in an upcoming tertiary institution, and does animation jobs on the side. Jim, having quit his job as a designer to try his hand at photography, has quickly made a mark among photographers in the country.
Each member of the band, due to their diverse career paths and life interests, brings a different ingredient to the overall magic that is their unique philosophy and sound.
